Mullins Reversed Vega Box
$453.97
The Cheverolet Vega was produced from 1971 to 1977 and had a new manual steering box designed around the Vega's small, lightweight platform. The box was referred to as the GM140 or Vega box. When GM offered a 6 cylinder , and later a V8 in the Vega, they went to the larger 122/525 manual box. The use of the GM140 should be limited to street rods under 2500 lbs. GVW.
It is important that the gearbox is on the center tooth of the pitman shaft when the wheels are in the straight-ahead position. To verify the box is centered, one of the four keyways on the pitman shaft should be in line with the center of the case. To center box, turn the input shaft clockwise to lock, then turn counter clockwise approximately 2 1/4 turns lining keyway with center of case.
Some aftermarket pitman arms have oversize splines that do not fit properly on the steering box Pitman shaft. Because they slide too far onto the pitman shaft, the nut cannot be properly tightened. A flat washer can be added between lock washer and pitman arm to eliminate this problem if necessary.
The Vega box shares the same mounting hole configuration as the 122/525 manual, the 605 power, and most 800 power steering boxes.
